System Requirements:

A webserver or web hosting account running on any major Operating System with support for PHP

A SQL database system, one of:

FireBird 2.0 or above

How to Install PhpBB3 using Fantastico De Luxe?

Step 1: Login to your cPanel account http://www.yoursite.com/cpanel

Step 2: Click on the Fantastico De Luxe Icon in your cpanel account.

Step 3: Under the “Discussion Board” section, Click on “PhpBB”.

Step 4: On the right panel, select “New Installation”

Step 5: Fill in your directory details. If you want to install it on your root directory (www.yoursite.com) leave it blank else insert the directory (eg: /phpbb or /phpbb or /forums/). Fill out other information and click “Install phpBB”.

Step 6: Phpbb3 would be successfully installed.

How to install phpbb3 manually?

Step 1. Download a stable version of phpbb3 from phpbb.com

Step 2: Extract all content and upload it to (public_html or www folder). If you’re installing phpBB3 on a sub directory, upload the script on a sub-directory (e.g. /forums or /phpBB3)

Step 3: Start the installation by going to url: http://www.yoursite.com/ or http://www.yoursite.com/forums (your sub-directory)

Step 4: Click on ‘Install‘.

Step 5: You’ll see a page as below. Please make sure you have the following details:

The Database Type – the database you will be using.
The Database server hostname or DSN – the address of the database server.
The Database server port – the port of the database server (most of the time this is not needed).
The Database name – the name of the database on the server.
The Database username and Database password – the login data to access the database.

After you have all the above data click ‘Proceed to next step’.

Step 6. A compatibility check would be done as shown in screenshots below. If everything seems fine, click ‘Start Install’.

Step 7. Fill in your details and click ‘Proceed to next step’. No need to fill DSN and Database server port.

Step 8. Database connection would be attempted and you would get a screen like below if confirmed. Click ‘Proceed to next step’.

Step 9. The, you have to fill your administrative account details.

Step 10. Administrator setting would be checked. Click ‘Proceed to next step’.

Step 11. The configuration file would be written and a confirmation like below would be seen. Click ‘Proceed to next step’.

Step12. In the next step you’ll get a chance to edit the default email setting and server settings along with a note as this “The settings on this page are only necessary to set if you know that you require something different from the default. If you are unsure, just proceed to the next page, as these settings can be altered from the Administration Control Panel later.” Edit the settings you want and click ‘Proceed to next step’. If you have ssl connection you would have to ‘Enable’ cookie Secure option. You can also keep the domain name as ‘www.domain.com’ or ‘domain.com’

Step 13. You’ll get a phpbb3 installation completion screen as below. Click ‘Proceed to next step’.

Step 14. Congratulations, your phpBB 3 is successfully installed. Click ‘login’ and enter your new forum.
Please follow the warning below:
Warning: Please delete, move or rename the install directory before you use your board. If this directory is still present, only the Administration Control Panel (ACP) will be accessible.

That’s it, you’re done.

Possible Phpbb3 installation errors:

Error #1: You might get a ‘table exists’ fatal error during the installation of phpbb3 script as show in the screenshot below.

Solution:

Go to your cpanel account. Click on ‘Sql database’. Click on ‘phpmyadmin’. Select your phpbb3 installation table and ‘empty’ the table. or select all the table starting from phpbb_  (as shown in screenshot below) and ‘Drop’ them. Please do it with caution.

How To Backup Your phpbb3 forum?

[a] To create a phpbb forum database backup:

Step 1. Go to your forum admin panel.

Step 2. Select ‘Maintenance’

Step 3. Select ‘Backup’ and choose the following option as per your needs.
Backup type: Choose ‘Full’
File type: GZIP
Action: Choose any option as per your needs.
Table select: Select all.
Click ‘Submit’.

OR

Step 1. Login to your cpanel account

Step 2. Click on ‘Mysql Database’. Then click on ‘PhpMyAdmin’

Step 3. Select your phpbb3/forum database

Step 4. Click ‘Export’

Step 5. Select ‘all tables’

Step 6. Check data and structure property.

Step 7. Check ‘Save As’ Option

Step 8. Click ‘Go’ and save the file on your computer.

[b] To create a backup of phpbb3 Files

Step 1. Take a timely backup of all the files in your phpbb3 forums root.

Step 2. Save them as per dates or maintain a log, So any edits made by you on the files, can be restored later.
