What is Web Hosting?

Web Hosting is a service which stores web pages and database on web servers so they can be accessed on Internet using a browser.

Say you create a web page and you need to show it to the world, how will you do that? You need to rent web space on web servers along with bandwidth from a web hosting provider.

Web space/Storage space: It is the storage capacity provided by the hosting company to store your files and database on the web server. Most of the web server use Linux operating system for better stability and security.

Bandwidth: When a user request a particular site on the Internet using a browser.
Say you type ‘http://www.hostluck.com’ Your browser would send a request to the server which stores the pages of the particular site. Then it would download the page from the particular web server. Depending on number of visitors to the page, the amount of data is transferred from the server to the user’s pc. The amount of data transfer allowed in your hosting account is called Bandwidth.

IP address: Ip address is a unique Internet protocol number assigned to each web server. ex:  75.155.68.98

Domain names: Hostluck.com and yahoo.com are some domain names. These domain names refer to ip address of the server they are pointed to.  So when a browser asks for hostluck.com its referred to the i.p.  75.155.68.98. All the files of hostluck.com are stored on a server located with i.p. 75.155.68.98. Domain names are registered using a domain registrar company.

Email Accounts: An email account like name@yourdomain.com are also provided by hosting companies. This service usually comes with your hosting account.

Types of Hosting:

There are many type of hosting accounts. Some are stated below.

Shared Hosting: In shared hosting packages, many sites share a web server together. Renting a dedicated web server could be costly for single site owners. These difficulty is solved by hosting many sites on a single server. This bring down the hosting cost and is a win-win situation for all. Cpanel and various other features are provided by the hosting companies to manage your hosting account.

Reseller Hosting: Any Webmaster with sufficient knowledge can start a hosting company using a reseller hosting package. In this type of hosting you can host your own site’s as well sell hosting to others. A special software called Web Host Manager is provided by the web hosting company so you can create Cpanel based web hosting accounts for your clients.

Semi-Dedicated Server: Say you have a site which needs large amount of bandwidth and disk space along with heavy cpu resource usage. But still its not big enough that it needs a dedicated server. Then you can opt for semi-dedicated plans where there are no complexities of dedicated server, yet you get a better performance and usage availability than shared hosting.

Dedicated Servers: A site which requires enormous bandwidth and storage space along with heavy resource usage should go for a Dedicated server. In this package a single user use a dedicated web server. This are the costliest package but they give highest disk space and bandwidth.

Clustered Servers: In this package, a chain of web servers are used by a single user.

Managed Hosting Service: In this package, the dedicated server is completely managed bu the web hosting company staff. So user can concentrate on the site and not worry about various complex issues of a dedicated server.

Ecommerce Hosting: In this package the hosting environment tailored with high security using ssl certificated and various other features.  But these features also come in shared hosting packages nowadays.

Proxy Hosting: In this package, the user is allowed to run proxy sites, which are heavy on resource usage.

FFmpeg Hosting: In this package, user is given ffmpeg add-on in their hosting account, used for Video file conversion. A boon for Video based site’s.

File Hosting: In this package, a user stores files for future use or for others to download and no web pages are hosted.

Non-Profit Charity Hosting: Various Hosting Companies provide free web hosting to Non-profit sites working for special humanly cause.  :-)
